Dubai Achieves Milestone of 200 Organ Transplants in 2024, Thanks to 65 Donor Families ‘Your Donation Saves Lives’ Campaign Raises Dh46 Million for Kidney Failure Patients

In a significant healthcare achievement, Rashid Hospital in Dubai successfully facilitated over 200 organ transplants in 2024, owing much of this success to the selfless donations of 65 families. Known for its specialized trauma and emergency care services, Rashid Hospital has established itself as the leading organ donation center in the UAE, providing life-saving procedures to patients in need.
A Remarkable Contribution from Families
Dubai Health has expressed its gratitude to the donor families, acknowledging their generosity in offering the ultimate gift of life. The hospital’s statement highlighted the crucial role played by these families in making the transplants possible and helping save lives.
As part of its continued support for families involved in organ donation, Dubai Health has launched the Hayat Lounge at Rashid Hospital. This dedicated space provides a comfortable and private environment for families to discuss organ donation options with healthcare professionals, ensuring that the process is handled with sensitivity and care.
Collaboration with National Authorities
Dubai Health’s efforts in advancing organ donation have been strengthened through continuous cooperation with several key national entities, including the National Centre for Regulating Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues at the Ministry of Health and Prevention. This collaboration facilitates smooth coordination for organ donations and ensures compassionate care for donor families.
Dr. Muna Tahlak, Chief Medical Officer of Dubai Health, commended the multidisciplinary teams involved in organ donation, saying, “We are proud to be at the forefront of organ donation efforts. Thanks to the support of the community and the dedication of our healthcare professionals, we are able to provide hope and second chances to patients in need.”
Supporting Children with Organ Failure
Dubai Health’s commitment to organ donation extends to specialized care for patients with organ failure, especially children. Notably, in 2024, the healthcare system conducted 54 kidney transplant surgeries for pediatric patients. Since 2016, Dubai Health surgeons have successfully completed more than 160 kidney transplants, offering hope and improved health outcomes for both children and adults alike.
Dr. Zeyad Al Rais, Chair of Critical Care at Dubai Health, shared, “Through our integrated approach to organ donation and transplantation, we ensure that each donation honors the legacy of the donor and gives life to those in need.”
Raising Funds for Kidney Failure Patients
In addition to the transplants, Al Jalila Foundation launched the second edition of its kidney transplant fundraising campaign, ‘Your Donation Saves Lives’, raising over Dh46 million. The funds will support more than 65 kidney failure patients, providing them with critical surgeries, dialysis treatments, and post-transplant care.
Dr. Maria Gomez, Director of the National Centre for the Regulation of Human Organs and Tissues Transplantation, emphasized the importance of collaboration between local and federal authorities in supporting organ donation efforts. She stated that this collective approach is essential to the development of healthcare services and is a cornerstone of the Hayat Program, which supports organ transplantation across the UAE.
A National Effort
Dr. Gomez also praised the contributions of various public and private hospitals that work alongside local health authorities to enhance organ donation services. These include the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Mubadala, Emirates Health Services, Sharjah Health Authority, and various private healthcare providers across the country.
Conclusion
The collaborative efforts of Dubai Health, national entities, and generous families have marked a remarkable milestone in organ donation and transplantation in the UAE. This initiative has not only saved lives but also raised awareness about the importance of organ donation, ensuring that many patients receive the second chance they so desperately need. The Hayat Program continues to lead the way in making life-saving transplants more accessible, reflecting the UAE’s ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare and promoting social responsibility
